Over the last 2000 years, Christianity has flourished around the world. However, the history of the Church is one that is fractured and scarred. Because of this, Christians today, despite being surrounded by fellow brothers and sisters in the Lord, feel tension and competition with those who should be colleagues and not adversaries. There have been many writers, such as C. S. Lewis and Philip Schaff, who aimed to bridge the gap between rivals, but their best efforts have not been entirely fruitful. The Church is still as divided today as it was before their time.
Worse than that, we see as time plays out the truth in the book of Jude. He writes, "For some people, who were designated for this judgment long ago, have come in by stealth; they are ungodly, turning the grace of our God into sensuality and denying Jesus Christ, our only Master and Lord... [T]hese people—relying on their dreams—defile their flesh, reject authority, and slander glorious ones... [T]hese people blaspheme anything they do not understand. And what they do understand by instinct—like irrational animals—by these things they are destroyed. These people are dangerous reefs[e] at your love feasts as they eat with you without reverence. They are shepherds who only look after themselves. They are waterless clouds carried along by winds; trees in late autumn—fruitless, twice dead and uprooted. 13 They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shameful deeds; wandering stars for whom the blackness of darkness is reserved forever" (Jude 1:4, 8, 10, 12-13). What was a stark warning in the first century is now seen as reality. Many congregations refuse to accept the truth of basic scripture as they rely on their dreams instead of on God.
